Observation4

This is the last observation. I found that many organisms I've observed before have disappeared. There are very few micro organisms in my MA. The major organism is Lictonotus. There are many this kind of organisms. They have long bodies and move not very slowly nor quickly. In the book "Free-Living Freshwater Protozoa: A Color Guide", the author tells that all members of litonotus are flattened predatoy or scavenging ciliates. I think it should be the reason for the death of other organisms.
There are still some single cells in my MA this week, but not as many as before.
Rotifers are some of the organisms that are still live in my MA. There are also many different kinds of rotifers, but the number is very low.
There are another organisms which are seemed to be quite many in my MA. They are genus Neobursaridium. This one is also the organims that I couldn't find the name of it before.
Few cyanobacteria are in the MA.

Observation3

Most of the things I observed last week are still there in my MA this week, and there are some new organisms that I haven't found before. The number of rotifer, halteria, and some other organisms that I observed last week has decreased, but the single cells are still keeping a large number.
There are the organisms I saw today:

1.Tachysoma
It has some filaments at both its head and its foot. It's body is long but not very thin.
It has well-developed (immotile) dorsal bristles.(125)

2.paramecium multimicronucleatum

3. Biepharisma( Phylum Ciliophora)
It's an interesting organism. Its body is long and thin. It sometimes moves and sometimes gather up itself.

4. Gastrotricha
I have observed it last week, but only one. This week, I found two in my MA.

5. Epistylis
There are still many epistylis in my MA.

6. cyanobateria

7. Rotifer.
There are always many different kinds of rotifers. This week I observed a new kind of rotifer which doesn't move away from it's space but moves its filaments by itself. There are also some other rotifers as the same as I observed before.

8. I found a really hugh organism which is nearly transparent but dark in the middle of it. It moves also very quickly. Its shape is ellipse but very long. I don't know what it is. When I asked Dr. McFarland to watch it, it's missed. I tried to find it but I couldn't find it any more. So we can't get its name. But it's really an interesting one because of its size.

Observation2

This is the second observation. I watched many organisms that I have watched last week, but there are still something that I haven't noticed last time.
1. There are more single cells I observed today.They are very small and transparent. They move very quickly.
2. Last week, I only observed one epistylis while I observed many epistylises this week.
3. There are more halteria this week than last week.
4. There are two kinds of rotifer in my MA. One is shell-shaped with a tail. The other one is longer and has two thin tails. There are a great number of rotifer in my MA.
5. I found some algae which is brown. But I also found that there are still some "blue-gree" algae which are "Oscillatoria" in my MA. There are less oscillatoria this week.
6. What's interesting is that I observed the meiosis of paramecium today. They were linked at one side and then separated quickly into two pieces of strings.
7. I have taken some pictures from which I found two new organisms that I haven't observed last week. These new organisms are called "Pelomyxa" and "Difflugia"
Pelomyxa: like a sun, has mant filaments around it.
Difflugia: like a bud.
8. Gastreotricha(Gastrotrichs)
Lepidodermella
"Its color is brownish to transparent. Its head has three distinct lobes and two pairs of tufts. Its body is covered with tiny scales. and has two posterior curved sprongs.(177)"

9. Another organism that can been seen often is belong to Cilia, but I don't know its name yet. I will ask Dr. McFarland next Tuesday.
This is the unknown cilia.

Observation1

Today I observed six kinds of organisms.

1.The first one is called " Rotifer". There are a lot of rotifers that sways their tails when they are turning.

2.The second kind of organism I observed is also very common to be seen in my microworld.
It is called "Oscillatoria".
There are many Oscillatoria in my MicroAquarium. They are long filamentous cyanobacteria. They are green.

3.Halteria
Ciliophora(Ciliates) 纤毛门(纤毛虫)
Spirotrichia(Spirotrichs)
"Quiet shallows among decaying vegetation or near the bottom"(96)
I observed that they are very small and transparent. They are round and just like small balls. I can't see clearly by using the light microscope but when I observed it by the electrical microscope, I got their shape and I also saw their cilia.
They move like "bouncing balls"(96).
There are many halteria.

4.Epistylis
Phylum Ciliophora
I watched only one epistylis.It's just like a lily.

The fifth and the sixth organisms are all brown and oval but one moves very quickly,one moves quite slowly.
5.The quickly moving organism is called "Paramecium. It has a head and it always sways its head when it's moving. There are quite a lot of parameciums in my MicroAquarium.

6.The other slowly moving organism is called "Euglena". I think that it has a tail.


PS:Last week I thought I observed some worms in my MicroAquarium but this week I didn't see them.

Term project

This Tuesday we set up the term project which is to observe the diversity lives in the world. Everyone of us need to have our own MicroAquarium. Mine was filled with No.2 water and I also put some mud and green plants in it. I observed it with a microscope and I found that there were some single cells that moves very quickly from the left of the screen to the right. I also watched some worms with long and thin body, they waved thier bodies just like some ties.
My observation time is on Fridays,1:00-2:00.
